Cloth Create-a-Long

There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself. ~John Gregory Brown

Over the weekend I joined Mel's washcloth create-a-long. Just like she, I had a big stash of cotton waiting to be made into cloths. I have previously made many and used some as gifts, but a little motivation to increase my pile didn't go astray. The yarn I am using is Lion's cotton bought for about $2 a ball at Spotlight. It is a little course, but does knit or crochet up to be a nice sturdy cloth.
Here is my first cab off the rank. Believe it or not, it is exactly the same yarn as the above, only photographed on a different day at a different time. This bright blue looks almost unreal, the light must have been so bright when I snapped this.
It looks so sweet when it is folded in quarters. This little wedge with a cake of soap on top will make a delightful gift. Sadly the blog on which I found this pattern no longer exists so you'll have to leave me your email address in a comment if you'd like to use this pattern. I think it's my favourite.

On my knitting needles and I have another one on the go.

Just to keep me interested I am hooking this cool X stitch pattern from Celtic Mommy.

  1. I used to knit dishclothes, but I like your pattern much better. Sadly, I don't have time to knit anymore!

That is sure strange about the color difference. Doesn't seem possible that sunlight could make such a drastic difference in color!

Have you ever run across any yarn made of rough nylon? I would love to make a washcloth with a 'loufah' texture. I buy such a washcloth but would love to make my own. The rough texture takes away dead skin cells and leaves smooth, soft skin, much like a loofah would, but I can throw these washcloths into the washer and dryer!

  2. Wow just love the job you're doing on those washcloths. I crochet so I especially like that one.

  3. Thanks for your lovely compliments. I haven't seen that type of nylon yarn HS Mama yet I don't usually look out for something like that. I tend to be a big softie :) I'll let you know if I do though and I might be tempted to give it a try.

    Thanks for your comment.

  4. Hiya Cee!
I'm so glad you like my crocheted washcloth! Since we do not use paper towels or napkins here, I have an abundance of cotton cloths laying about all over for my boys to use. If you are ever on the knitting/crocheting site Ravelry, you will find oodles of free cloth patterns on there as well.

  5. I love the dishcloth. It looks like you could fold it up and put it in a vase and it would look like a flower. Please e-mail the pattern to me if you can at villagegardeners@aol.com I haven't taken the blog plunge yet, but might get courageous enough to do so soon. Thanks, Cindy

  6. I love your dishcloths! Sadly, I do not crochet yet, but would love the knit patterns you are using. I joined Mel's create-along too, but haven't cast anything on yet. Thank you for sharing!

  7. Your cloth looks similar to something I designed in 2007. Not sure though and would have to look back through my blog.

Also, if you like that one, take a look at some of the other's available on my blog.

  8. Yes I have done so Dione. I am currently trying Aimees amata facecloth. It looks similar to the one here but the pattern is a little more complex. Have only finished one wedge and I'm not convinced all is looking right so I'll have to delve into that one again tonight.

    thanks for popping in

  9. Hi Hettie

Thanks for popping in. Yes I do enjoy your cloth, simple but with a little twist to give it interest.

I am a member of ravelry so must pop in there again to see the cloths they have available.

We have many cloths around here also. It is only when my mother arrives that the tiny bit of paper towel remaining on my bench (since I stopped buying it) is used at all. I can't go past cloth.
