Verdale Olive Estate, Two Wells, SA

"The olive grove of Academe, Plato's retirement, where the Attic bird trills her thick warbled notes the summer long" ~ John Milton, English Poet
A short Sunday afternoon drive led us to Verdale Olive Estate in Two Wells.  Now Two Wells isn't really the type of place that entices you in to stop and enjoy a coffee.  It is quite small (although larger than I had anticipated) and simply a country town on the flat, dry and dusty Adelaide Plains not far from the mangrovey beaches of Port Gawler and Middle Beach where our day concluded.  However I had seen a piece about this new olive tasting cellar door on Postcards recently and noted the address so we could pop in when we needed to stock up on olives.  [The mention of "chocolate olives" also enticed a number of members of our family as well.]  Well I sort of noted that address, we had to stop and ask some locals just where to head in order to find the olive grove.

We were not disappointed.  We were welcomed in and allowed to browse around before sitting down to taste some olives, their olive tapenade and a superb sundried tomato and capsicum dip containing olives of course.  We ordered a Greek Pizza which we watched being cooked in a wood-fired oven.  Interesting, an indoor wood-fired oven working hard on a 33degC day with air-conditioning on in the room as well.  It all worked though - it worked very well.  My Generous Gentleman declares the coffee was excellent!

The food was all delicious - so fresh.  The olives were simply divine and tasted as though they were real fruit freshly picked - of course there is a lot of treatment that goes on with olive production but you could tell these had not been sitting on a shelf in a supermarket and goodness only knows where before that.  And, of course, our aim is to support local growers buying local produce direct whenever we can.

If you are ever travelling along Port Wakefield Road and have a hankering for a cup of coffee, a freshly made pizza or some olives I definitely recommend you stop in at Verdale Olive Estate.

Fabric Baskets

Even the simplest wicker basket can become priceless when it is loved and cared for through the generations of a family.  ~ Sister Parish

Fabric baskets also have so many uses I have found.  Perhaps a couple of mine might become priceless in generations to come! :)

I enjoyed making some little baskets with beanbags in them for a variety of "play" objectives for my two girls.  I love the way the ones for little Eee turned out especially since this fabric has been around for ages.  It was first in my mother's cupboard and has since come to mine after Eee's arrival.  It is the type of material you look at and wonder what on earth you could do with - apart from make a quilt.  It has looked lovely as a little cushion and sheet on her first birthday cake and now also to make a little fabric basket.  Wonderful as we just don't need any baby quilts!!

Ess enjoys playing Bean Bag Toss and Throw with her cupcake set.  I attached a card for her with some ideas for extended bean bag play such as placing a beanbag on your head, dipping your chin and catching the bean bag, also crawling with the bean bag on your head.  As well as the obvious throwing to capture them in the basket - quite tricky as the basket is rather smallish.

I have also revised the pattern a little to make a bigger basket to house my Matryoshkas.

This has also given me inspiration to make one to hold our remote controls which never seem to remain contained no matter how hard we try.

Possibilities for baskets seem endless.

And next year's words await another voice.

Dolly Delights

These sweet little dolls were a gift from myself to my sweet little girls.  I used the Ruby Doll Pattern of One Red Robin.   The one on the left is for Ess and she has named it after herself.  She has quite taken to it which is heartwarming.  Little Ess dolly comes most places with us but must stay in the car to look after it while we are out.  She also rides around the house on the new Mouse Wheely Bug which Santa left here very generously a few days ago.

The dolly on the right aquired her name while she was being made - funny how some things you create just come up with names as you make them!  She is Maggie.  Little Eee calls her "bebe" which is so very sweet.  Thus her name is "Maggie Bebe".

"It's so gorgeous!" was the cry from Ess' lips when she opened her parcel.  Maggie Bebe has received many kisses from little Eee, cuddles as well, before she tosses her aside to continue her journey riding on her little toy truck.

Do you like my new little family of Matryoshka Dolls?  I have enjoyed some time after Christmas relaxing with my family and participating in some "making".  These are so sweet.  Ess' kindy teacher showed me a set she made and offered to loan me the pattern.  Of course I could not refuse so I used her pattern in Australian Homespun No.64 Vol.9 No.9 to make "Nesting Nellie and Her Girls".  Now we are wondering which girl in this household will claim ownership of the dolls - so until Mum gets to making things again we will claim joint ownership.

"Well, hello, dolly! It's so nice to have you back where you belong."  ~ Jerry Herman 1931-

Also, I'm not really a painter but I have been very tempted to make these gorgeous little painted egg matryoshka dolls....one day!

Merry, Merry Christmas!

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.  ~Author unknown, attributed to a 7-year-old named Bobby

Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,
Love incarnate, love divine;
Worship we our Jesus:
But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,
Love shall be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and to all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.

Words: Christina RossettiTime Flies: a Reading Diary, 1885.

Music: GARTON, traditional Irish melody

This lovely little hymn has been in my mind all week.  It encapsulates something special about Christmas for me this year.

Listen to it here (although it is not the best version of this little tune).  If, for some reason, the page has changed then go to the home page and search for Love Came Down in Titles under 'L'.

Have a very Merry Christmas!!

"Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:11

Christmas Elves

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself...
~Norman Wesley Brooks, "Let Every Day Be Christmas," 1976

I heard the pitter patter of tiny feet last night...

There must be some very busy bodies in this house into the wee hours of the night...

This morning I found evidence of a little visitor...

...or two...

Hmm...some little Christmas elves perhaps.

Oh the joy of the creation of anticipation, of participating in the element of surprise.

What a delight it is to be a parent!

Christmas Mini Black Forest Gateux

Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.  ~Washington Irving

The verdict on the little pieces of chocolate wonder referred to previously is of course that they are superb!

If you haven't yet tried this recipe issued by Australian Women's Weekly, I highly recommend you give them a go.

The recipe I have linked to above doesn't seem to be quite the same as the one I made - just a few differences - like having to weigh the eggs to get other measurements - oh my!  So if, like me, you do not buy Australian Women's Weekly then give your Mum a call because she probably does for some reason (no offense Mum).  Mum very kindly read the recipe from their Christmas issue out to me over the phone so I could make these delightful little morsels to delight my family.
