Swan Lake

Sadly we were unwell during the holidays. One thing that soothed however was the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky and the magnificent choreography of Graeme Murphy in The Australian Ballet’s recent production of Swan Lake.

Ess has particularly enjoyed the ballet. Each night she has been listening to The Story of the Ballet written and narrated by Ann Rachlin with The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by André Previn. The story Ess hears is quite different to that portrayed in the recent production, fortunately. It tells of how true love can rescue good from evil: the traditional story of Swan Lake as an old legend found in Greece, Germany, India and Russia.

This contemporary production portrays images etched in the minds of today’s audience of the story of “the disposable princess who became the people’s princess” Read Shirley McKechnie’s review in The Age.

Nevertheless the music is absolutely beautiful, amidst the drama it is so calm and peaceful to have in the house as the family rests. The dancing is wonderful, so emotive. One becomes truly engaged in the story. What a powerful narrator is one’s own body!

I am thrilled to see my daughter delighting in the classics, and in this ballet in particular, which will no doubt remain close to her heart as she grows older.

Autumn Fall

Autumn leaves turning
Yellows, Oranges, Bronze
Memories creating
For the childhood of my girls.

Autumn leaves falling
“Mum did you see that?”
Twirling, whirling, swirling,
falling to the ground.

Autumn fairies flying
Flit from tree to tree
“Willow the Wednesday Fun Day Fairy
races ahead of me.”

Autumn showers falling
Enhancing colours boldly
Bronzes, gold and reds
against the dreary grey sky.

The essence of Autumn newly found for me.

Ess' Rite of Passage

Late January 2008

As I stood vehemently discussing excess water leakage from our evaporative air conditioner running down the road with an SA Water Rep, I curled my fingers under Ess’ hair, her beautiful bob. Only it was not there, not entirely, it was thinner, wispier and coming away in bunches in my hand. For a fleeting moment and thinking “Oh my goodness, what’s going on?”, I moved inside with her seemingly to get her out of the sun, the heat of the summer, as if she was unwell. As we moved I realised that she had cut her own hair. Just prior to our visitor arriving I had been resting along with Eee. Ess had been quietly playing. Mmm, yes, very engaged in playing hairdressers! On entering the house she showed me where her hair was, some of it bundled together, some of it taken outside, some still in the scissors. We gathered it, not only to tidy, but also to keep and remember this day. A day of ritual, yes is it not almost a rite of passage for a little girl to enjoy cutting her own hair? I must ask my mother…

Now we enjoy her gorgeous little elfin cut, revealing the beauty of her young innocent face.

Eee’s Arrival

When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Native American proverb.

Just over 7 months ago, on 30 August 2007, we experienced a day unlike any other, little Eee graced us with her presence and added a new dimension to our simple life. She delights, frustrates and brings us joy.

Those chubby cheeks remain and delight. Mummy wrote this simple song for you.

Ten little fingers, ten little toes.
Two blue eyes and one button nose.
Chubby cheeks and legs as well.
I love my little Eee, so well.
